"Am I Suited to Become a Mentor? A Community Workshop on Initiating Mentoring Programs for Black Males "

The purpose of this workshop is to establish mentoring as a bonding and trusting relationship between an older adult and a young person, which is long-term in nature.  Mentors serve as constant guideposts and as a form of stability in the lives of young people.  However, this workshop will distinguish the differences between a role model, a volunteer and a mentor.  The most major difference is the level of commitment made between a mentor and mentee.  We will also examine both good and not-so-good role models in the African American community.  These items will be addressed, in addition to involving local non-profits and churches, i.e. Rites of Passage programs, in a discussion regarding mentoring.  Attendees will also have an opportunity to talk about their mentoring experiences (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and the larger group will be able to provide input/feedback.  Attendees will feel more empowered and imbued with the necessary skills to mentor as a result of this workshop.  They, too, will be able to train others in becoming effective mentors.
