The purpose of this workshop is to provide attendees with a model of how to teach members of our community about their legal rights and laws that impact their daily lives. Attendees will be better able to provide information and strategies that will assist community members in effectively exercising their constitutional rights, and reducing the likelihood of their becoming embroiled in the criminal justice system. As our constitutional rights continue to erode as a result of court decisions that expand police power and the establishment of more invasive law enforcement procedures, we must be even more diligent in knowing, understanding, appreciating, and asserting our constitutional rights. Additionally, too many of our young people learn about the consequences of certain laws after they have broken them, and face incarceration, probation, or other “collateral consequences” of an arrest and/or a conviction. Topics that will be discussed include: Police Search & Seizures, Mandatory Minimums, Domestic Violence, License Suspensions, Juvenile Law, and Two/Four Strikes Laws.
